The COC invites you to experience the great outdoors as seen through the eyes of adventurous people, and to learn what it takes to stay active and healthy.
Albi Sole, Executive Director of the ‘Outdoor Recreation Council of Alberta’ (ORCA), will be presenting his group's perspective on the use of Crown Land by both motorized and non- motorized users.
Competition between special interest groups for access to Crown Land in Alberta is intensifying. Without a group that represents the interests of non-motorized recreationalists, they tend to be ignored by every level of government. The Alberta Government is currently re-writing the rules around outdoor recreation and this represents a unique opportunity for outdoor groups such as the Calgary Outdoor Club to band together to make sure that our activities get the support and recognition they deserve.
Albi Sole is a Mountain Guide, Avalanche Forecaster, and passionate advocate for outdoor activity. At various times he has written the first Ice Climbing Guidebook, led or participated in many high altitude climbing expeditions including to Everest. He is the Executive Director of the Outdoor Council of Canada.
Raihan Khan, our newly-minted Training Coordinator, will be speaking about Hiking 101: LEARN TO HIKE
This is a special event for (a) newcomers to Calgary Outdoor Club (COC), (b) novice hikers, and (c) those who have no hiking experience at all.
Raihan Khan is a volunteer coordinator who has been hiking in the Canadian Rockies since 2007. This suburban fulltime-keyboard-punching soccer-dad went on a spectacular hike some years ago with younger co-workers and since then has had an inseparable relationship with the beautiful mountains at our doorstep. Raihan will use photos and stories to talk about preparation, gear, fitness, safety, how to find good companions, photography, etc. Those interested can also learn about backcountry hiking. Raihan has led numerous overnight trips to alpine huts in the Rockies and in 2016 with fellow coordinator Bob Z safely led a COC group of 13 through the 80km full Laugavegur trail in Iceland – a Nat-Geo top-10 hike.
Those who come to this event will be invited to one of 3 beginner hikes to be organized by Raihan in May and June of 2017.
Also, Calgary's Best Pubs VIP Cards will be made available to attendees to this event. Find out if your beer tastes 15% better if you get it 15% cheaper!
The Live the Adventure series is an executive initiative to bring COC'ers together to learn about having fun in the great outdoors, safely.
