BackBack is het flamboyante Gentse jazztrio rond gitarist Filip Wauters met de impact en de sound van een donderende rockband. Door de jaren heen groeide dit drietal uit tot een vaste waarde in het Vlaamse clubcircuit. Hun unieke, aanstekelijke brouwsel op basis van jazz, rock, free jazz en funk heeft zijn volwassenheid bereikt op de cd Backo die in 2010 verscheen op het label El Negocito Records. Hun grooves herinneren meer dan eens aan het Amerikaanse trio Morphine. De bezetting waarin baritonsaxofoon en elektrische gitaar in een snedig duel verwikkeld zijn, doet dan weer denken aan de confrontatie tussen John Surman en John McLaughlin op McLaughlin’s weergaloze debuutplaat “Extrapolation”.

U moet ons niet geloven, Knack verkondigde in 2007 al: "Wauters is een van de spannendste gitaristen die we de jongste tijd op de scène hebben gehoord. Zijn heldere, soms krakende toon barst van de harmonische spanning en is een perfecte sparringpartner voor de vlammende sax van de Maeseneer. Het geheel wordt zowel gesaboteerd als in de hand gehouden door het vindingrijke, excentrieke spel van drummer Giovanni Barcella."


A Belgian based jazz trio.
"An unusual line-up" you might think, or "no bass player, isn't that a handicap?" Not so with Backback. Through years of rehearsing, gigging, and recording the trio has forged their own impressive sound and they also seem to have a magic formula that keeps their music fresh, ingenious, yet accessible. Filip Wauters' original compositions are moulded around and bounce off and the band's individual playing styles and explore a whole range of musical styles and influences: jazz, rock, free jazz, funk, the result is uniquely Backback.

All members are experienced professional musicians and have played in a number of different bands and feel at home in various genres, but their true labour of love is Backback, the way they like to play the most. Now an established name in the Belgian jazz and club scene, Backback plays regularly at festivals and in smaller clubs.
