Free screening of Jaffa, The Orange's Clockwork, from the Catastrophe Club at Passing Clouds - representing the Hackney Palestine Solidarity front by showing movies for and about Palestine.
Jaffa, the Oranges Clockwork narrates the visual history of the famous citrus fruits known worldwide as 'Jaffa oranges' long before the creation of Israel.
The history of the land and a close reading of how the Jaffa brand has been represented throws light on Western Orientalist fantasies about the Holy Land and the state of Israel. The Orange was one of the symbols that helped build the Zionist discourse about Palestine as a place where settlers made the desert bloom.
The film by Israeli director Eyal Swan shows the orange groves at a time when the Arab city of Jaffa was one of Palestines' most populated and thriving cities.
PLUS - a discussion on PSC initiatives with PSC Executive Committee member Salim Alam.
