Party: MakJ and DJ Scene

MakJ debuts at Temple’s Main Room Saturday, August 6th 2016 alongside DJ Scene at LVL55.

About MakJ (Main Floor)

Mackenzie Johnson, aka MAKJ, uncovered a passion for mixing and DJ’ing at only 15 years of age while living overseas in China as a professional racecar driver. At a 17, Johnson made his way back to the U.S. with a unique outlook and even greater ambition than ever before. He was able to acquire DJ’ing tutelage from one of the best in history- the late DJ AM himself, who trained MAKJ in the art of scratching. He’s performed at the 2013 and 2014 Ultra Music Festivals in Miami and earned himself a slot on the Main Stage at the inaugural 2013 TomorrowWorld event in Georgia. In Fall of 2013, MAKJ embarked on his first cross-country bus tour with Bingo Players and Bassjackers which hit every major market in North America. Since then, he’s hosted his own European sold-out “Let’s Get Fucked Up Tour” and his “Peyote Tour” which included stops at Coachella, Ultra, Northern Lights Festival, Euphoria Festival, Webster Hall, Ruby Skye, BETA to name a few.

MAKJ’s creativity and diversity as an artist his displayed in his production work with his tracks that have awarded him much critical acclaim and praise. His originals, edits, bootlegs, and remixes have received immense support from renowned artists such as Hardwell, Tiesto, Afrojack, Porter Robinson, Chuckie, Avicii, Laidback Luke, Nicky Romero, Michael Woods, Nervo, Bingo Players, Sander Van Doorn, W&W, Showtek, David Guetta and many others. Additionally MAKJ hosts a weekly radio show on Clear Channel’s Evolution channel which can also be heard on 101.7fm in Boston and online via iHeartRadio.

About DJ Scene (LVL55)

It’s easy to delineate most DJs into certain categories: The scratch-happy battle types, the commercially-minded radio guys, the shaman leading his flock at the club with a steady barrage of anthems. Seattle native DJ Scene is a rare person who’s done all of the above, as well as produce his own music. With residencies at some of the top clubs across the nation, a podcast series that reaches 350,000+ subscribers, a weekly radio show and a string of classic mixes under his belt, Scene has become one of the most sought-after DJs in the country.
Fascinated by Seattle’s grunge in 1990s, DJ Scene started as a drummer for various local rock bands. Soon after he started listening to hip-hop like Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang. He wanted to add scratching and other percussive elements, to his growing bands, but it fell on deaf ears.

Shifting his musical focus from drums to decks, the fledgling DJ became obsessed with his newfound love for turntables, playing house parties anywhere he could while simultaneously perfecting his skills as a battle deejay. After watching Roc Raida win the DMC Championship in 1995, he saw a whole new level his craft had achieved. In 2002, Scene won the Northwest DMC Championship.

As weeks of practice became months, Scene’s name held an increasing amount of sway in the area. He became a fixture at Yo Son!, a popular weekly residency that Rolling Stone called “one of the country’s top parties,” spinning open-format before the genre even had a name. From clubs Scene expanded into radio, mixing live 5 nights a week while also pre-recording weekly mixes for XM Radio 67. No stranger to production — Scene’s been crafting his own music since those first turntables over a decade ago — the producer has released two volumes of his popular 2080s series, a whirlwind mix of hip-hop and dance blended with classic tracks from the 1980s. In addition, the ubiquitous DJ currently holds down a weekly mix show every Saturday on WILD 94.9 FM in San Francisco.
