'Who is to blame when the thief breaks the vault?'
The flagship production of The Hermetic Theatre Company, Threnody tells the story of a young girl on the precipice of maturity. Questions of morality, sexuality, voyeurism and death abound in a fractured narrative that follows three distinct worlds of mystery, memory and magic, silhouetted by a neo-spiritual score that erupts from the earth. It's dark. It's sexy. It's weird.
Written and directed by Michael McStay (The Ghost Phantasm, Esther), with an ensemble cast that includes Zoë Jensen (The Canterbury Tales, Kill The Pm, Woyzeck, Cloud 9, Trojan Women), Emele Ugavule (Mother Courage and Her Children, In The Blood, Woyzeck, The Light in the Piazza), Lauren Pegus (Worst Kept Secrets, Osama the Hero,Trojan Women, The Fortunes of Richard Mahoney), Sarah Jane Kelly (The Canterbury Tales, Sucking Dublin, Cloud 9, Othello), Bailey Thompson (Dumbsaint: Disappearance in a Minor Role Part III, Three Women, YANG, Womb), Ryan Carter (The Canterbury Tales, Rausch, Curse of the Starving Class, Macbeth) and Andrew Lindqvist (The Canterbury Tales, Howl, Noises Off, Flight, Salome), with a core group of prodigious musicians, with set design by Jacqui Schofield (Gods of Egypt, A Place To Call Home, Book of Days, Hinterland, The Dissolving Self) and lighting design by Alexander Berlage (The Sugar Syndrome, War Crimes, Book of Days), this production is an exhibition of Sydney's brightest young theatrical innovators and artists.
