FUNDRAISER FOR CFL VETERAN RICK SOWIETA
On Feb. 23, Rick Sowieta will have surgery NanoKnife in Stralsund, Germany. The physician, Dr. Mathias Birth, also hopes to perform Whipple surgery.
Canadian physicians don’t use the NanoKnife for pancreatic cancer. The surgery is deemed experimental, with insufficient research behind it. OHIP has denied financial support.
“According to the data, it increases your life span a couple of years and there are people who have gone beyond that,” said Sowieta. “I’d be brain dead if I said I wasn’t nervous. But you want to live and you have to do what you have to do.
